Frequently Asked Questions About Glytone®

Q. How many peels for the average patient?

A. This depends upon which peel program you choose. The most gentle, gradual program takes about 10 months with 2 peels a month for a total of 20 peels. For moderate peeling with little or no irritation, the program of 25 peels takes about 6 months. For a more aggressive program involving only 15 peels for 6 months, we recommend our Rejuvenating Peel Pads. The most aggressive program we recommend involves 13 to 15 peels over a 3 month period. It is possible to institute a more or less aggressive program, of course, but the average program is 6 to 9 months involving 15 to 25 peels.

Q. Should patients who wear contacts remove them before peels?

A. This is not necessary as you will be carefully avoiding the eye area during the peel.

Q. Can peels be done on body parts, e.g. chest, hands and lower arms?

A. Certainly. In fact, you can be more aggressive on these less-sensitive areas of the body.

Q. Should patient apply a sunscreen just after they've had a peel?

A. Because the skin is sensitive after a peel, it is best if nothing is applied. Naturally the skin needs to be protected from excessive sunlight and if applying a sunscreen is the only way to do so for the remainder of the day, it is acceptable to apply one. Be cautious, however, about possible stinging or irritation from the sunscreen. Glytone's Sunblock SPF 20 is in a moisturizing cream base which makes it less likely to cause irritation.

Q. Can patients with dark skin be on the program?

A. Absolutely! Be on the look-out for possible hyper or hypo pigmentation in your darker skinned patients.

Q. Can young teenage patients be put on program, e.g. c. 12 years of age?

A. Yes. We would recommend going with the most gradual program or stepping up cautiously.

Q. Can anyone who works in the office perform peels? Is there a limit to strength they can apply (if not the Doctor)?

A. It is entirely up to the discretion of the doctor who can perform peels in his office. There is no limit in strength that a non-doctor can apply. We recommend the following: only a licensed nurse or esthetician perform a peel. Doctors perform all peels at 60% or greater strength.

Q. What if patient is using Retin A® or topical antibiotics, when is Glytone product applied?

A. A Glytone product (hydrator or exfoliator) can be applied over the anti-biotic 5 to 10 minutes after application. For Retin A®, we recommend one of three regimens: (use at night)

1. Retin A® replaces the evening product.
2. Apply Retin A® and the evening product on alternative evenings.
3. Apply the evening product 1 hour before bedtime and then wash again and apply Retin A® at bedtime.

Q. In hotter, humid climates: Patients who apply a sunscreen cream in the a.m. will not want to put another cream on beforehand, can they use the Glytone Overnight Facial Fluid in the a.m. instead of p.m.?

A. Yes. Similarly, in very cold or dry climates, the firmer can be dropped entirely and the hydrator used twice a day.

Q. Does Fading Lotion 5 turn brown?

A. All Hydroquinone products will turn brown under the proper conditions and given enough time. Fading Lotion 5 is designed to remain clear (slightly light yellow actually) for at least two years under normal conditions. There are reports - usually for warmer climates - where the product has darkened before its time. Naturally, we will replace those products free of charge.

Q. What is the shelf life of products?

A. All Glytone products should remain fully potent for at least three years.

Q. Why does Day Cream for Oily Skin contain Castor Oil/Isopropyl Palmitate, Wax Emulsifiers when they are on our list of ingredients we recommend to avoid?

A. Castor Oil and Isopropyl Palmitate, Wax Emulsifier in their pure form are comedogenic. When they have been emulsified properly, however, the finished product is not comedogenic. This particular formula will be familiar to offices that know Lederle's Aquitain, a non-comedogenic moisturizer which is also the base of the their Aristocort A.

Q. Why is there no % symbol on Peel Products?

A. We are not allowed to put a % symbol on the label because that would imply that there is an active ingredient in the product implying that it is a drug.

Q. Can Fading Lotion 5 be used on Cafe au lait spots?

A. Fading Lotion 5 will lighten the hyperpigmented spot which accompanies a tumor, however it will not get rid of the macule in a cafe au lait spot. The results will be minimal, the patient could also use 4% HQ Skin Bleaching Cream, but ultimately will have to use a prescription HQ.

Q. Can Glytone products still be used if the patient has eczema, psoriasis?

A. It has been said that the use of glycolic acid products along with these skin conditions may exacerbate the condition. Each patient is different. The doctor can either decide not to utilize the products at all, or step up very very slowly and if any signs of recurrence develop discontinue use immediate.

Q. Why does patient have to wait 6 month after use with Accutane® before using glycolic acid product?

A. Because Accutane® is an under the skin drug many changes occur to the structure of the skin during use. Scarring may increase because of the sensitive nature of the skin's structure after use. After 6 months, the majority of skin changes will have taken place and skin will be able to handle the exfoliating effect of the glycolic acid products.
