One of the most exciting advances in plastic surgery has been the use of Botox to eliminate facial wrinkles. Once used for spasm of the vocal cords and spasm of the lower eyelids, the FDA has now approved use of Botox for forehead creases and to eliminate the lower eyelid crows feet.
There are several types of Botox (A through G), but only Botox A is currently approved. Thousands of cases have proven its effectiveness and safety.
Botox works by preventing release of messengers (acetylchoine) at the junction of the nerves and the muscles. Without the release of the messengers, the muscles are temporarily paralyzed. Botox takes 1 to 3 days to start working and can last 1 month to 6months.
Many claim that the more Botox injections, the longer it works. We have not found this to be true. The response time tends to be individual specific—each vial of Botox and each patient tends to react differently.
For example, for one patient the wrinkle smoothing effect may last 3 months and the next injection may last only 1 to 2 months, and a third injection may last 4 months.
What is Botox?
Botox has become a popular treatment for removing frown lines since it was approved by the FDA in 2002. Botox is a natural, purified protein administered in tiny injections into overactive muscles that cause frown lines. Botox blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles to relax to create a more natural, line-free skin surface.
